Consider testing the waters with something a little more free-form and geared toward indie development like itch.io? It is not as prolific as something like Steam, but it is a much more developer friendly platform giving developers total control over pricing, sales, etc. It has free hosting, no lengthy approval process, control over how the game is presented on the store page and is generally considered to be very community focused. Furthermore, I believe it has pay-what-you-want pricing format for developers with a default fee charged of only 10% on sales, which can be reduced by the developer down to 0%. Meanwhile, fees charged by Steam on sales approach 30%.

Check it out here: https://itch.io/developers

itch.io is a simple way to distribute your indie games online for free. Upload your game files and screenshots all to one place. Create a customized landing page where your game is the focus. You can even set a minimum price for your game, giving fans the opportunity to pay what they want for your game.

Anyway, just wanted to make sure folks were aware of other options.

No idea how many purchases you expect. But besides being a bit "bulky" sometimes, these platforms often imply quite some limitations to the user. Steam for instance does not allow you to start the software more than once normally.

Personally, I am fine the way it is, especially no copy protection and whatsoever. If the number of expected purchases is in a " low" range, i.e. less than five hundred, it may well be done the way it is now and collect money via PayPal or something similar. This cannot be more expensive for you than platform costs at Steam or so.

Just my thoughts,
Ralf.

Anyone very familiar with Steam, Epic Games, or other online distributors ?

I am financially good right now, without selling anything. But I wonder
once in a while if I am leaving money on the table that could buy more
trinkets for the grandkids and polish the old lake cabin a bit.

TacOps v4 is somewhat dated/retro, but it is stable, and I get a few emails
weekly asking where it can be bought.

Thoughts, suggestions, pros and cons ?

Best regards, Major H
