First worked on in 2006 and 2007. Revisited in 2008 and again briefly a year
or two ago.

Practical limit of 100 km by 100 km.
Variable map scales.
Additional map cell data field for up to 256 flavors of terrain.
Additional map cell data field for ground level elevation.
Additional map cell data field for height of trees and buildings.

Was one of several rabbit chases that together burned me out in 2007 when I
tried to work on too many big things simultaneously.  The other failures
were a Mac OSX port and real world elevations.
